The Power of Contrarian Thinking

Why leaders need people around them who speak the truth

We’ve probably all experienced leaders who refuse to confront reality, and who only wanted to hear good news.

I know I’ve experienced this before.

In fact, throughout my career I’ve worked for several leaders who simply didn’t want to know when something was going wrong or needed to be fixed.

They were focused only on positive information. Information that made them feel good about themselves and the company.

That can work for a short while.

But eventually, it’ll destroy an organizational culture. And maybe even the organization itself.

That’s why you need to embrace contrarian thinking in your organization.

Invite people to question everything. Celebrate when you get dissenting opinions.

And create an environment where people feel safe bringing you issues and insights that don’t just match your own perspective.
