Your Personal Board of Advisors
Why every leader needs to build a personal growth network
You’ve no doubt heard it said that “it’s lonely at the top.”
To a point, that’s true.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Every leader should create a personal board of advisors who can speak into your life and your business to help you grow and thrive.
This is not (at least not typically) an actual board that meets together, but it could be. It could also be a mastermind group that you’re a part of, or a men’s or women’s networking group.
Most often though, this is an informal group of other leaders and partners that you tap into when and as necessary to help you be successful.
For me, this includes my wife, and about twelve other people. Some of these people are former bosses, executives in other companies, strategic partners, friends who work in completely different industries, and other really smart people.
These people aren’t helping me run my business day-to-day. But I tap into this network for a number of key things:
When I’m stuck and need someone smarter than me to speak into a challenge
When I need expertise that I don’t have (i.e., innovation/tech, sales, talent development, parenting, life in general, etc.)
When I’m emotionally drained and need encouragement
When a new product, service, or growth concept is brewing and I need help to refine it or need someone to tell me it’s a bad idea
When I’m looking for talent and want to find someone who is already vetted and proven
When I’m looking to collaborate and not just go it alone on a project
When I’m looking to meet someone to whom I don’t already have a connection
When I’m facing a significant challenge or need to make a big decision and want to get outside perspective before I make a final decision
This informal group of partners and advisers is incredibly valuable to me and have helped me grow and thrive in ways I never would have if I had attempted to do it all on my own.
If you don’t have a personal board of advisers, I encourage you to begin building that asset today.
