Values Matter
In today’s culture it’s easy for a leader to get lost trying to navigate real truth and values in an organization. We’re faced with the concept of relative truth and values at every turn. My truth. Your truth. Their truth.
How is a leader supposed to guide an organization in a unified direction if your organization doesn’t prioritize and institutionalize a set of shared values?
The short answer?
You can’t.
In fact, without shared values, your organization is like a rudderless ship, adrift at sea, swaying one way and then another based on the directions of the wind.
But you can avoid that by establishing and centralizing shared values.
Here’s how you do it:
Establish the values that your organization will stand upon
Espouse those values regularly and publicly
Live out those values personally, setting the corporate example for behavior
Align organizational decision-making around these values
Teach the values early and often; reteach when necessary
Compare your actions to your values regularly
Make values-based decisions
Celebrate and praise those who uphold your values
