What does it take to bring out the best in others?
Many leaders mistakenly believe that they’re “owed” someone’s best simply because they are the leader, or because the company pays people well.
I can see how it might feel that way, but if you’re relying on positional leadership or how big of a check you cut to someone, you’re going to be disappointed in the long run.
Those aren’t as motivating as you might think.
Instead, there’s a four-step framework that I rely on to consistently bring out the best in my people. You can steal my framework and implement it in your organization today!
Here are the four key steps to bringing out the best in your people:
Believe in your people. It might sound simple, or even trivial. But the number of leaders who don’t actually believe in their people is sadly higher than you’d think. Believing in someone else (and telling them as much) is empowering to them.
Encourage your people. Many leaders aren’t natural encouragers, so this can be a challenge. But seldom does anything create the kind of positive impact in others like an encouraging word from the leader.
Share with your people. Don’t gatekeep information. Don’t hide important details that your people need in order to carry out your objectives. Nothing good comes from compartmentalizing information and keeping important details from the people you’ve entrusted to work on your behalf. The more you share, the more effective they can be.
Trust your people. There is something incredibly empowering and encouraging when a leader says the phrase, “I trust you.” If you want to see your people grow and succeed at the highest levels, give them the gift of your trust. Avoid the pull to micromanage, and give your people the latitude to get things done in their own ways.
Follow these four steps to consistently bring out the best in your team!

Do this one thing well to accelerate your leadership career. While there are tons of tips and tricks you can apply to improve your leadership, if you don’t do this one thing well your career will stall.
Show don’t tell. People don’t change just because you tell them to change. You need to show them what successful change looks like if you want them to follow it.
Don’t put band aids on bullet holes. Quick fixes will never help you solve long-term problems.
